Never Give Up!Indoor Mile Series Final 17 Feb

Never give up, yes that would describe the outcome of the indoor winter cup this year. I skipped the 1500 at the masters meet the night before to run this on fresh legs -FAST. Sitting out that 1500 turned out the be a feather in my cap. Oh, yes, and I deliberately picked lucky number 13! Last time, I got it by chance, this time you could pick a number if you registered early online and paid an extra 5 bucks that would go to helping buy sweets for the kids when they finish. Last time I got 13 and thought it funny and then kicked ass. I guess it is "lucky" indeed! I was also feeling rather PINK. I decided to go with pink and some serious flower power for fun. I came into this knowing all I had to do was show up and run so as not to give up my 2nd place overall ranking in the series. Sitting out was still risky if by chance Nadya were to beat Lena for the win this time she would knock me back to 3rd so I decided to run on fresh legs just in case. Nadya is fast as we saw back in December, but Lena is a tough cookie and has the Monster Kick From Hell. The only way I have a chance with her is to do what Coach says and pound the pace from the get go and then it's whoever can hang on. My mistake was farting around running with the ladies til 400 or so to go and then Lena would get me. If I raced these ladies in a 200 or 400 I think I'd be toast, but I can go just a tad wee bit slower and keep pounding in hopes they will drop off.

Ok no farting around, stick to the plan go out no slower than 85-6 this time and PARK and or slightly pick up. That's just what I did. Nadya went out wicked crazy fast in 83 and I just let her. Lena was on my heels but at 300m I decided to just go and pull away. That's exactly what I did the only problem is that when I get out front, I no longer have any kind of rabbit up ahead. That's tough if you want to run a solid time. SO I just parked out in the 85/84 range on the 400s more like I was doing a workout. I was ordered not to look back this time Coach would be my eyes. After moving ahead in the first 400 he told me to surge just a little again and that did it-they dropped off. I lapped some folks along the way. I just ran the rest on autopilot to finish 8 seconds ahead of the next lady and 9 ahead of 3rd.

Here's the shocker I never would have predicted in a million years. Nadya ran most of the race in 3rd and after looking at midrace photos, she had dropped off of Lena quite a bit too. I just assumed Lena was 2nd. Even if she's feeling like crap, she won't give in without a fight. She has a serious finishing kick. Well, Nadya also has a kick. Hell, she nearly got me back in December after Lena and I farted around way too long until practically the final 200! Nadya clipped Lena at the finish! I definitely did the right thing sitting out that 1500. They were fresh too but I don't think I could have pulled away enough from them so as not to get swallowed in the final lap had my legs been tired from an evening race the night before as I did last yr. So, now this is interesting. Lena and I both have two wins, one 2nd, and one 3rd. It's a complete tie in the standings!!! I never would have expected that! In 2010, Anna and I split 3rd place when our points were dead even. The only possible tie breaking factor would be if they looked at our 4 times from each race and gave it to whoever posted the better times. That would lean in my favor without question. Both my winning times were faster than hers were. Actually, 3 of my 4 times were faster than hers. I only had one lazy lazy run in the opening race December 1st and Lena's winning time was slower than usual because we all ran super tactical. I seriously think they will just call a tie though since that's what has happened before. Seems fair to me. The awards banquet is in 3 weeks so we shall see.

I started running in this series in 2008 and I was still in the midst of that damn hole I had been in at the time for over a yr following a serious bronchial infection and other crap that took me out for a good year and a half. I struggled but, couldn't even break 6 at the time which for someone who without much preparation could always up and at least run a mid 5 was extremely frustrating and downright depressing. I got lapped and I got my ass kicked and handed to me on a silver platter on a regular basis. Lena used to lap me back then too. Still, Coach stuck me in these winter miles to try and get some of my speed back that was so far gone. I started moving up and even managed to finish 3rd in the standings in 2010. In the 2010-11 season I was out by default because the first race was super early in November that year-the DAY of 100K WORLDS IN GIBRALTAR!!! So, it was just going through the motions that winter and finishing behind ladies I may have challenged for a spot on the podium had I not missed the first race in the series. Last winter, I finished a solid 2nd as Lena and I spent the winter duking it out til the finish in each race. I never would have expected to continue getting faster this yr and tie for the win. Plus, this series has always been quite competitive in all the divisions. This is NOT my distance it's just a way to keep my speed from going all to hell while training for 100K Euros in April. Lena is a good middle distance runner, it's her strong spot where mine lies in the looooooooooong stuff. So there you have it, ultrarunners too have a need for speed!

2 miXC 2-02

I've been busy as a bee with training, work, class and haven't been keeping up here too well. Anyhow, here are some pics from the 2 mi xc I won on the 2nd. I decided to go with BLUE this time and temps were just a little below freezing so I only needed the arm sleeves. Pics courtesy of SriChinmoy Russia.

The winter indoor mile cup finished on the 17th. I will post soon, but the ending was a huge surprise...
I love turtles and collect them.Hell, I run like one:) The organizers have a drawing     contest and this little boy made this awesome turtle!
                                                        on Coach's heels:-)

Indoor Mile 20 Jan-Really?!

lucky 13 ...

                                                        striped socks baby!(December run)

Yeah- no farting around this time. I don't know what got into me but I ran the first 300 with the ladies this time and saw my first 400 was going to be 87 ish(aka too slow) and just took off and ran my own pace. First 800 was not barn burning because I ran the first 300 slower (2.53) but then just dropped the hammer picking up the pace on every lap to drop the 2nd half in 2.48. Lena hung on until about 800 and she and the rest of the pack dropped off ...A LOT. I ended up winning by 14 seconds! FINALLY, I wasn't afraid to lead and just run my own damn pace with no one to hold me back. My mistake is hanging with Lena tactically all the time but getting nailed in the end because she has a better kick. Coach told me to just pound the pace from the get go and they should drop off...well that ALMOST worked in December. I moved later and Lena was able to answer. Oh, and the really cool part was I had the top time of the day across the board. Running with the 29 and under youngsters would not have helped me as top lady was only 5.46. That's not allowed anyways. Soooo the plan for the final in February is to not mess around and just run my pace from the get go. If someone goes with me, fine, but at least I will run a far better time by not sitting back and sandbagging on someone's heels. I think I just finally got sick of finishing 2nd all the time in the mile even though it's totally not my distance. I seem to be on a mission to prove ultrarunners can still be speedy too and break the stereotype that we have no leg speed for the shorter races.

Oh, and yes, it has taken me forever to find time to post because my underemployment is over and I have now picked up a couple more kiddies, so I am booked now in my afternoon/eve time and am waitlisting the rest or referring them to other teachers. I suddenly just got bombarded with requests after the holidays. Careful what you wish for:) So my routine is now, eat, sleep, work, run study, repeat (yeah still doing correspondence classes via Uof Alaska Fairbanks).

2 Mile XC 6 Jan -PINK!

Pink indeed it was and on purpose in memory of Mom, who went to heaven on this day in 2007. This was my 3rd race inside 7 days and I was rather groggy in the morning, but my legs perked up and I managed a 13.09 on fresh, loose , not fast snow. On the track, that time would be weak sauce, but on snow, it's pretty darn good.  I was surprised. Last year I was quite a bit slower on the ooshy snow. The snowpack was in fairly decent condition, but there was fresh stuff on top which made for conditions like running in sand. It was good enough to win the women's race by nearly 3 min and I only let 5 guys get away this time! Most important, was to win this one for Mom.

WILL RUN FOR HONEY!!! Pulse Sports Battle 2 January

I've got good news and very bad news to start my year off. Let's start with the bad news then onto the good. I got up in the morning and sat down to breakfast and coffee and as I was checking my mail, tweets, etc., the first thing that caught my eye was a tweet from Mike Wardian of Team USA that 100k Worlds had been cancelled! Seriously? I had hoped it was joke or a mistake, but sadly after checking the IAU site, it wasn't. Apparently the Koreans lost a sponsor and don't have the money to put on the race. IAU is now looking for somewhere else to host the Worlds in October since that's what everyone was planning on time wise. It's extremely frustrating for all the athletes of course because we all tend to plan our big races months in advance so as to properly train and peak. It sucks, because now I don't know how in the hell to plan my fall racing. What if Worlds gets moved to September or even November? Can IAU even find a host on such short notice? We are a candidate city for 2014 in Daugavpils, but 2013 would be too soon. Not knowing WTF to do or what to train for  following the 100k Euros in April (yes, so far, that's a go) just sucks. Do I try to plug in a fall marathon before? When should I be looking to do a US ultra in the fall logistics allowing? How can I do that if I have no clue as to when the 100k will be? Talk about a way to screw with a training cycle when you can't plan!

                                                         just after the finish

Now, for the good news. I started the year off right with a win in the 8k xc run out in Romashkovo just out of Moscow. I love these trails. This is where the snowshoe was back in March. The trails are awesome with rollers thrown in to keep it interesting. The hills can be tough, but at least it's a decent strength workout. Temps were -3C although no wind so it felt warmer. It was a one layer day for me and I was plenty warm. I had the option of going to the track and doing repeat 5000s (zzzzzzzzz) or going outside to play. I chose the more fun option of playing in the snow.

I really do love trail running and feel right at home in my element on snow packed trails after nearly 10 years in Alaska. I train on snow packed trails every day unless it's one of the two days I happen to have an indoor interval session of sorts. The forest is really pretty this time of year with snow covered branches. The course was a loop somewhat flat in the beginning and at the end but there were some decent hills in the midsection between 3-5k and this section was pretty trashed with loose snow left from the cyclists. The other sections had fresh, fairly packed snow. You could ski, bike ,or run the course and each discipline had its start time. The tricky thing is that everyone started individually and it left you guessing who finished where. I started toward the middle based on our numbers and after about 600m, had caught and passed everyone who had started ahead of me! It was lonely out there and there wasn't a soul in sight. So, I just kept chucking along at a decent effort hoping I'd maybe place when everyone's times got sorted out. In the final km one lonely guy did finally catch up and I thought, "Thank God at least I didn't make a wrong turn if there is ONE other runner!" The course was well marked. After the two of us finished, others started trickling in. Organizers were really quick in getting results posted and it turned out I had won by over two minutes and only 4 guys had finished just a bit ahead of me! I quickly changed into my drys on top and went out for a cooldown. I was just getting out of my Icebugs and  getting dry socks after my cooldown and about to change out when they called us out of the warming tent for the awards. Efficient organization! Top 3 got sweet prizes-literally from the bakery and from the beekeeper, fresh honey :-) Will run for honey! I only eat real honey from the beekeepers not the store bought stuff. I do like the Romashkovo honey as I first tried it when I was out for the snowshoe. The beekeepers were selling yummy honey. So that's how 2013 got started!

pretty video of the first and last 1500 on the course (easy sections)
(from 2012) but it looked much the same snow wise yesterday

Happy New Year 2012 in Review and Bucket List for 2013

Wow! I don't even know what to say. 2012 was possibly one of the best seasons in my career-full stop. I have not even come close since my grad school days in the early 2000s. Lots of people have been asking me and my coach what we have been doing differently in training this year that's produced solid times across the board. really, do you want to know the TRUTH? The single best  thing out there to improve performance is good old fashioned S L E E P! I now do this regularly and on a fixed schedule. That means I bed down and get up at roughly the SAME TIME every day and train at the same time and go to work at the same time.

I have no regrets about leaving that nightmare work situation that had me on split shifts and totally exacerbated  sleep disorders I've struggled with since I was a teenager. When children don't get their naps, they misbehave and cry. When grownups don't get sleep, we are bitchy and nasty all the time. I got to a point to where I could no longer function normally over a year ago let alone recover properly between hard workouts. I started blaming it on gettin' old but that wasn't the issue, it was lack of regular, QUALITY ZZZZZs and the cumulative effects of that on every aspect of my life. I quit and never looked back and my mind and body thank me. Sure, I have had a recent bout of underemployment in the fall, but it's just about passed and I'm soon to put students on a waiting list again as I have recently got quite a bit of requests. All of these have been through my own channels. Agencies have been 200% fail in recent times. It's mostly that they are simply HORRIBLE with COMMUNICATION and this just wastes my valuable time. I don't want to talk about work, I am interested in REAL WORK, NOW not pussy footing around waiting to get a hold of this one or back with that one. If you have something real and concrete, lets talk if not, don't waste my time. I teach ENGLISH and we have a nice idiom in English: Shit or get off the pot!  The only agency I will give credit to is the one I worked for pre 2008. They are still good but just have the full time live- in jobs for now, but I will keep in touch with them. The rest have yet to come up with anything concrete and I'll throw another idiom out there: Time is money. I'm done wasting my time. I'm not the only teacher who feels this way either about poor communication with many of the nanny agencies. It's more a case of, please stop pretending to have work when you really don't!

If any prospective teachers are reading this who are thinking of teaching overseas and coming to Moscow, I will be blunt, do NOT come here and get involved with the language schools, PERIOD. Some use it as a foot in the door then leave because the working conditions suck. I only did for a while because I was stuck and needed a visa after being independent initially.  You will most likely be working for peanuts, working in split shifts, and chasing your ass from one end of the city to another all bloody day. Over time, it will ruin your health and well being and kill your social life since you will be working antisocial hours.

If you don't have the experience, qualifications, and know how  to go independent, start out elsewhere. In Moscow, if you are going to teach, the only financially viable and practical way to teach is to be independent working as either a governess(or) or privately. Yes, it's loads of red tape and a huge PITA to file independently from the get go, but in the long term, it's worth the initial expense and hassle. Oh, yes, and LEARN RUSSIAN for feck's sake if you are going to live here for a long time. How folks still get by without  the language baffles me. I would think it would be akin to living in a boring fishbowl.

Work wise, yes, I really want to get my sweet ass back to Alaska back to my tenured teaching  position, but there still is nothing. I am really close to giving up on ever being able to resettle in the US as much as I would eventually like to. I would love to run ultras in the US and maybe see about getting additional sponsorships, but I can't just get on the plane without a contract and job waiting on the other end.  I do not want to live in the Lower 48  and there are no jobs there either. Yeah, I'm probably going to have serious re- entry issues after being out for almost EIGHT years now too. If something doesn't give in the next year or so, I seriously need to look into buying a small place in Riga and going. Sure, I'll make less, but if I OWN my place, I won't have to deal with a housing payment and I will be living in a much healthier place than Moscow.

One thing about me is that if you tell me it's unlikely or that I probably can't do something, I will go out and do it just to prove you wrong! I just turned 38 (ouch) and thought my visits from the PR Fairy were just about done especially at the shorter distances. Well, throw that out the window. I saw PRs this year in the 1000m (track),2 mile xc, 50K, and 100K. 5K is very debatable with a handful of 18.42-3s  like it was childsplay and not on the freshest legs to boot. One was a 6k split in September still not recovered from 50K World Cup, the next couple were in the US in October. The 18.43 I posted in the US was a couple days after flying in and mostly on crushed gravel-not a fast course and the paved sections were slick that day. I'm pretty sure that rested and on a fast course, I could have taken out my 18.37 from my heyday in Fairbanks. I always questioned that PR since it was my only sub 18.50 other than what I started putting down this year. I'm just not a short distance runner, it's my weak spot, but despite the high volume training for my ultras, my speed was back in full force this year. I didn't have as much luck in the 10K mostly because I ran them right after spring and fall marathons. My trashed legs from the hills the week after Valmiera in Gzhel only came out to 39 and change and the 10 I had planned to run for time in the low mid 38s got mucked up when some a-hole knocked me over at the start. There were no 10s in October in the US on the calendar before the 50K for me to try again either. I ran an 800 in December and came within a couple seconds of my PR from the Palmer Relays in Alaska in 2004 but the performance here was indoors and indoor times (especially on this awful banked track) are always a little slower. I really hadn't been training much I was post-season resting more than anything and doing easy distance. Even my 3000 was a track PR and with an 11 flat xc split late summer in the 3, I knew I was in way sub 11 shape on the track but just nowhere to race which was a bummer. I was shocked that my speed at the short stuff was no worse than it was 10 some yrs ago and maybe a tad better despite the short stuff not being my thing. I was in shape for a marathon PR too but logistics didn't allow for it. I had nowhere to run early spring pre 100K and I sat out my chance at Chicago Marathon in favor of the 50K. It's fixing to be the same issue this yr as well- my fast marathon window will be early spring pre 100k but nowhere to go to do it.

Good ol' perpendicular training has helped me speed and distance wise I think. I trained similarly on my own in Alaska years ago when I had decent speed at short stuff but then could turn around and run a good half or marathon. Perpendicular training ? This is when you do your distance work, long runs, tempos, etc., but then do not ignore speed. For example, I might do a long run on the weekend, long intervals midweek, then come back on Friday and do 200s and or 100s so my speed does not go to hell. It works. I jump into shorter races and get my ass on the track because it sharpens my speed. My endurance is fine from the 500-600KM or so months on end, but speed needs to be remembered. I show up to the mile and people do look at me like "What are you doing here?" "Speedwork," I respond :-). After several top 3 finishes in said miles, I have gotten less of those looks. I really believe it's the track speed that carries over into the fast times in the ultras. Sure, you need to work your slow twitch muscles in those races, but, for me at least, I'm convinced it's what allows me to hammer in the 2nd half of longer races. The endurance is there but without the speedwork, there is no way in holy hell I would ever be able to drop 6 min miles or faster (3.40s kms) in the closing kms of my long races. The Chicago Lakefront 50K proves that. The legspeed to run close to MILE PACE in the last km came from track and speedwork! I'm getting more comfortable holding a faster pace longer. I'm also a conservative starter which leaves gas in the tank late in races too when I need it most.

Most impressive PRs were in the 50 and 100K. I cut 10 min from both. My 100K time still needs work though. Well, I think it does. Performance of the year I narrowed down to Daugavpils and Chicago and I have to go with Chicago. I look at how I ran that race and it has to be one of the best executed races plan and strategy wise alone in my career. I just wanted to try and repeat the huge PR I set in Daugavpils and get the Chicago course record. On Race Day, I had a wrenched lower back and 30MPH winds to deal with in Chicago. I went out like I did in Daugavpils hoping I could just hold on into the wind. The lead woman was up on me 2 minutes at one point and I could not even see her. I just sat back and kept my cool and waited for the right time to go which I did with just over 10k left in the race. I actually raced the final 10k and the final 8 was just insane. That's what an ultra is about though- being patient early on then racing later. I just ran on negative split speed from 38k on gradually building til I was running the final stretch at half marathon pace then dropping to sub 4 min km pace in the final 2 km with a 3.33 closing k. Mentally, that was a crossover for me. I went completely guts and eyeballs out wanting to see what I could do if I did. I also learned a lot about myself in that I have a hell of a lot of reserve I can still tap into if I'm not afraid and hold back. That performance in Chicago left me ranked 32nd in the world rankings in 2012! Physically, I am there, but in running that's only half the battle. In the longer stuff it's all mental. This is what I need to work on in 2013 I think in order to tap into that reserve. I would REALLY REALLY like to do the Chicago spring 50K late March, but it's only happening if I can get mileage tickets. I just cannot afford to pay for TWO trips to the US in a year and I still plan to go in the fall after 100K Worlds. I am getting greedy in old age and want to go for the spring course record while I still can.

Soooooo, this brings us to the Bucket List for 2013! First off is to stay healthy. I would like to once again chase after PRs in the 50 and 100K. Topping my season in 2012 will be a task in and of itself. I have 100k Euros in April and Worlds in the fall. I'll run Daugavpils again in August. I am still figuring out where to squeeze a US ultra in this year because I have a spring and fall 100K. Like I said, I  want to do Chicago in March, but not sure I can pull the trip off. I may be left to shop for a 50K as late as mid- late November after I recover from Worlds. I'd like to also keep my speed sharp too and maintain and or improve there. Finally, I'd like to once again thank Vitargo USA and Vitargo Russia for continued support as well. It's really helped in my races and coach Leonid for putting up with me :-)

Pix below are from my annual New Year's run in Kuzminki Park near my place. I can't believe this is the EIGTH year I have done this. Today was a modest 12k because I have a trail race tomorrow. I really look forward to more visits from the PR Fairy in 2013! She rocks!
