Chicago Marathon

This was the one where I literally broke all the rules. 4 days before the race, I was getting up to head to the airport to fly out. I got a text from one of the Vitargo guys in the US. Chicago was NOT in the cards at all, but I figured since they now knew I was on the start list and could run, that I'd better do so. The only issue was pretty obvious, I was less than 3 weeks off of Valmiera and had just run a trail half on Sunday. The prior week was high volume again (smthg just under 140km) and that half was supposed to be prep for the 50k on Nov 1. OOPZ! Monday and Tuesday were both 20km days knowing I was losing Wed to a pond crossing. So, first off, I had ZERO rest and NO taper going into this. There is the first rule broken. Next off, this was all pending my ability to find a friend with a couch in the city the night before since I cannot deal with driving in post race traffic OUT of the city. My brother's place where I stay while in the US is too far out for the train to be an option. They simply don't run early enough in the morning. I had already told my friend Dasha not to leave the key with her sister because I was NOT doing the marathon and Dasha had left town on Tuesday, so that option was out. Thank you Dara for coming through on a YES 3 days before the race! Dara and I ran Chicago in 2005, the year I PRed. 2006 was the last good weather year (yeah it was windy hail and slowed things a bit but better than the 80-90F we have had since with the exception being 2009, but I had ass/sciatic issues then).

I saw the forecast was for perfect weather in the 5-10C range sunny and light breeze.OK, I'll do it as a glorified training run for fun. I would have done a 30-35k long run 3 weeks before the 50k anyways that day so why not? I drove into the city on Friday to get my number and saw Tonis at the expo. He is Lithuanian from Russia and in NYC working for the time being. He runs with the Sri Chinmoy team. I also stopped by the Hoka booth because I wanted to make sure I had ordered the right size in the Cliftons as I had a  guys 9 and 9.5 (9.5 for future 100ks) on hold at Naperville Running Co for Monday pickup. Yup, they were out of ladies 10.5s. I tried on the guys 9 and kicked it around and immediately knew this was MY SHOE. They were possibly the most comfortable shoe I had ever tried. I am not easily sold on something unless I try it myself first. Soooo, I picked up a pair of 9s. My coach also got a pair in his size and he is even a harder sell than I am! On Saturday, I did my shakeout run in them and they were awesome. So I was about to break the next rule-running a marathon in totally new shoes! It was a risk but my coach said they should save you from the pavement pounding so you can recover faster after to focus on the 50k.

I went to Dara's Saturday afternoon and ordered a large cheese pizza no sauce to load my legs on. I had ordered a taxi into the city at 4:15. Dara is only about 20 min away from where I needed to go and the plan was to just take the EL back which I did. Bedtime was just after kiddie bedtime at abot 8:30 and I fell asleep fast. I really didn't have jet lag this time either because I used this diet plan I got off of Ariana Hilborn's blog (she was 2nd in Riga)on how to avoid jet lag:
http://www.netlib.org/misc/jet-lag-diet
It works!
The time difference between Moscow and Chicago is 9 hours and I started he diet just before that trail half I did 7 days before the maraton and 4 days before flying.

Palmer House- that's where the Alpine Runners had our room set up for club members to use before and after the race. We even have our own private gear check and access to clean toilets. Thank you Beth Onines for doing this each yr for us. I have had access to the sub elite tent before the race some yrs and the Alpine Runners room is even better. It was chilly in the morning, so no freezing before the race. Off to the start and I decided not to take my arm warmers but to keep my headband. it was about 6-7C- perfect! I had the mandatory goosebumps before he start to indicage it was not too hot not too cold. I was not expecting a fast time given the circumstances and all those broken rules. I had taken a 3 yr hiatus from this race because quite frankly, I was sick of training my ass off to get skunked by high heat and my focus has been on the 50k 3 weeks later. So, I just decided to go out and have fun no pressure. Sometimes, that's when I actually do best. 10k, I thought I had gone out too fast...this is 3:10 ish pace kind of fast for a training run......20k ...30k...still on pace feeling fine not hot not cold but feel fine. At this point it was just holding on for the finish and staying consistent. I had it spot on save for 36 37km I felt kind of funky but picked back up continued on and finished just over 3:12 to requalify for the A start if I want it next yr. It's not my best, but for a training marathon it was about 10 min faster than I had planned! As I was running, all I could think of was that I wish I hadn't run that damn trail half, but who knew?! Coach said it likely cost me 7-10 min at the very least compounded with the underrecovery from Valmiera. If we were going to do Chicago, he told me it would be hobby jogging and no racing between Valmiera and Chicago as they are only 3 weeks apart but I wasn't planning another longer race til the 50k 6 weeks and plenty of time later.

BTW-thank you Sinee for being out there at mile 25 :)

The next day, I can honestly say nothing hurt. My legs just felt like I had done a hard long run. I was able to tackle the stairs snas issues. I stopped in at Maperville Running Co. to pick up my Hokas I had on hold and get my medal engraved. They were doing the engraving in the basement and the lady working said she couldn't believe I ran the day before because I just skipped right on down those stairs LMAO! I really think it was the Hokas that made that difference. My hammys are always a little sore for a day or so after Chicago because it's so flat, but not this time.

From Valmiera to Chicago and Everywhere in Between!

I have been too busy travelling and racing to keep up here. I had started a Valmiera report just before leaving for the US last month and just got too busy to keep up. In six weeks, I have done 2 marathons and a 50k and several races in between in three countries and 2 continents, so, yeah, I've been busy. Here is what my fall season has looked like since Sept 21:
Valmiera
28-09 Marina Rodchenkova's 4.5k HILLY run on the course we had the hilly 10k earlier
5-10 Autmn Thunder -Trail Half
12-10 Chicago Marathon (totally unplanned and on a whim )
19-10 Care For Breast Cancer 5k Woodstock, Il
26-10 Shannon McNamara 5k Rolling Meadows, Il (xc)
1-11 Chicago Lakefront 50/50

In short, it's been no rest for the wicked.
So, this year Valmiera was a little better than last year, but I had a scary issue. I was doing fine and at about 36 37k I started feeling not right. Something to the effect of tummy issues and nausea. With so little left to go, I just pushed through it. Bless Anita Leipina's heart for pacing me in th last 4-5k We ran 100k Worlds together in 2012. The stomach thing was scary. After I got back to my room about 30 min later, I definitely must have eaten smthg. I was passing blood and that finally settlend down after a couple hours but not totally until the next day. Still not sure how that happened. Valmiera is never an easy race because the course is not easy peasy. I ended up 5th overall and 1st master here.

Marnia Rodchenkova's 4+k HILLLLLLS!
I took an easy week after Valmiera and next speed session was 7 days later on the hills I ran the 10k before Valmiera. Marina is a former xc world champion and still looks great and is in damn good shape. She finished not too far behind me! She used to be on the national team with my coach back in the day- really nice person. She did a great job putting on a nice competitive race (the kind where there is more running and less show). I am a bit sick of the less running more show types of races we have seen in Moscow over the past couple seasons. I prefer the honest competitive ones. I finished 7th overall and first masters at this one and managed to have an overall pace of 4 min/km on a tough tough course. That's faster than I was pre Valmiera!

Autumn Thunder XC Half
5-10
After Marina's run, I returned to regualar training for the Chicago 50k Nov,1. I felt good and was going to use this half as a tempo training type run to prepare myself for the 50. I got off to a decent start and felt well, but at 12,13k once again tummy troubles started brewing. My coach suspected chicken I had the day before but who knows. All I know is that with 3-4 k to go I was eyeing bushes and immediately ducked into them after the finish. WTH? Finished in distress just over 1:30. 2 races marred by tummy issues in 2 weeks...ugh.

Next posts will cover my racing in the US ;=)

Annnnnd We're Back....

Well sort of....

I deliberately went off the grid most of August so I could just train and not be bothered. If training went well and I felt I could possibly do decently in Valmiera at the end of September, I'd go if not, forget it. This has been an awful enough season as it is and I'm not up to making matters worse. A month off the 100k, I tried a half. Actually, I signed up for it before I got sick back in May and before I decided to run a 100k. Honestly, going into it , I still didn't feel ready and yeah, my time sucked. I wanted to give my number to another runner, but this lame organization does not have a system set up to do that unlike the Grom events do. I would never allow anyone to run under my name, so I would only pass my number if it could be reregistered in the other runner's name. That half ended in a torrential downpour  and high winds so much so that my number fell off with 4km to go:)

10 days later I ran the 15k xc final in the summer 15kxc series. I actually ran stage 2 only 9 days off the 100k just to hold my place in the standings-holy crap not fun at all on unrecovered legs! it was after that race I just disappeared. It did however feature a large bull MOOSE on the LOOSE!!!
That was definitely an I miss Alaska moment!  The xc final was the day I was able to carry the pizza, knock on the door, but not deliver. I held on until the final few km which included some wicked crazy fast surges in the midsections at 3.45/km pace. I ended up 4th overall still over 2 min off my best on this course from last yr. Yes, the course was wet and a little slick in a few spots from all day rain, but I'm not letting myself use that as an excuse. My legs still were not 100% and nearly 4 months since being sick at this point, I wasn't sure they ever would be again. Nope, still not putting myself on the list for Valmiera! I did however jump from 5th overall to 3rd in the final standings. The final standings are AGE GRADED so with world record holder Rimma Vasina in there, no one has a chance. She is 74 but can still run 13 min 3000s on a good day and sub 7 in the mile! I also not only won the 30-39 category as I have in all 3 events, but ended up 3rd for this race in the age grade standings. I got a nice pair of compression sox for that :) I was surprised. I know I'm nearly 40, but I get much less a "discount" than the other ladies and many of them are 50 smthgs who were top class athletes in their day like one who was a world class race walker. She still is in the masters world class!

Then something happened 2 weeks later. I signed up for the Grom 10k on purpose because I needed a DAMN good ASSKICKING HILL workout before Valmiera since Valmiera is a slow and hilly course. I returned to the hillllly course on the cycling track I trained on all the time as a grad student to keep my legs strong for my Alaskan mountain running. I ran my Equinox Marathon PR after a summer on this course! I thought those hills would kick my ass. They didn't! For the first time in FOUR MONTHS I actually felt strength in my legs again. I wore my polka dots for "Queen of the Mountain" haha!  They had a race within this race to see who was the best climber on the difficult 800m steep climb between 2-3km. I didn't push it knowing I could really pay for that in the end and just climbed at my normal effort- I ended up a second from 3rd  in the climbing division- who would have known!!!! ???? Maybe I should have pushed it! I finished 5th overall 1st old fart...aka masters.Yup here it's by birth yr not day....

Ok...much better  but still not officially on the Start List for Valmiera.....
Oh I should mention that this 10k was a DAY TWO race- I won the 2 mile the day before but didn't run all out. It  was enough to get me the win in the summer standings and sadly, my last race in the 20-39 group. Time to let someone else win now. Unless we get some regulars in the 40-49 gp , things are going to get lonely now :-( Highlights from the summer 2 mile:

Six days later, I ran a 7.5k on a course I last ran a week off WC100k in 2011. This is a great race but always seems to conflict with Valmiera-not this yr!!!! In 2011 I surprisingly won this running 4 min/km pace only a week off a 100k ( I did LOTS of resting after). I was able to pull it off this time at 3.45 pace! WOA- I can hardly remember when last anything smelled of 3.45-50 pace. I think it was the 5k in early April before the shitstorm hit. Things here are done strictly by age group and I managed a win in the 30-39 category. I got myself a sweet soundbar to boot :) Ok- I guess I will put myself on the list for Valmiera and get a plane ticket.....
On the way home I seemed to be getting a SORE THROAT?! F#CK NOT AGAIN! I just went home took 2000mg of vit C and started the Zicam and went to bed early and slept long. By the morning, thank the gods, all was clear. I was a bit tired though. For fun, I ran the Nike 10k in the evening since I was near the start at Moscow State anyways with a student who had asked if we could study Sunday instead of Monday this week because she was uber busy. That worked out better for me too. The plan was to run it easy like MP in about 43 or so min. I went out and legs felt like they hadn;t done much the day before and parked out at 4 min pace. finished a hair over 40 min just screwing around. That was a shock as I have never been a day 2 racer. Objectively speaking , I did have about 36 hrs between races which for me makes a big difference as opposed to 12-24. Evening race day 1 and morning race day 2 DOES NOT WORK which is why I almost never get to run the 1500 anymore at Moscow Championships. It's always about 6PM and the 3000 is the following morning.
Nike 10k:
Ok- after seeing the startlist in Valmiera, I knew that even if I had returned to form, I may not even make top 6 this yr! Still not sure if this will indeed be my last season of competitive running, I decided to head to Valmiera one more time...

report to follow....
